UPSC Civil Service Mains Syllabus

The UPSC Civil Services Mains examination is a crucial stage of the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. The Mains examination consists of a written examination and an interview. Here is the syllabus for the UPSC Civil Services Mains examination:

Paper-I: Essay (250 Marks)
Candidates are required to write essays on multiple topics. This paper tests the candidate's ability to express their thoughts and ideas effectively in a structured manner.

Paper-II: General Studies-I (250 Marks)
1. Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society
2. Social issues, modern Indian history, and the freedom struggle
3. The salient features of Indian society, diversity, poverty, and developmental issues

Paper-III: General Studies-II (250 Marks)
1. Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations
2. Indian Constitution—historical underpinnings, evolution, features, amendments, significant provisions, and basic structure
3. Functions and responsibilities of the Union and the States, Parliament and State Legislatures

Paper-IV: General Studies-III (250 Marks)
1. Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management
2. Indian Economy and issues relating to planning, mobilization, resource mobilization, growth, development, and employment

Paper-V: General Studies-IV (250 Marks)
1. Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
2. Ethics and Human Interface: Essence, determinants, and consequences of ethics in human actions

Paper-VI: Optional Subject-Paper 1 (250 Marks)
Candidates can choose one optional subject from the list provided by UPSC. The syllabus for the optional subject can vary depending on the chosen subject. Some examples of optional subjects include History, Geography, Sociology, Political Science, etc.

Paper-VII: Optional Subject-Paper 2 (250 Marks)
This is the second paper for the optional subject chosen by the candidate.

The total marks for the Mains examination are 1750. In addition to the written examination, there is also a Personality Test (interview) that carries 275 marks.
